Section Description

Effective decision-making is essential for promoting innovation, and utilizing data to guide choices provides a unique competitive edge in any business setting. This course aims to introduce modeling and computational techniques for making well-informed decisions, placing a strong focus on cultivating analytical abilities to critically assess models and convey insights for successful decision-making. By examining examples from various fields, we will investigate how to circumvent prevalent fallacies and misunderstandings when tackling quantitative issues. The initial portion of the course will address deterministic optimization, particularly linear programming, transforming problems into clear mathematical structures. The latter part of the course will delve into risk and uncertainty, integrating methods to define and enhance decisions amidst uncertainty. All applications will be conducted using Excel. It will be fascinating to observe how the critical analysis of these foundational concepts applies to an unexpectedly broad range of contexts!

Section Expectation

Active participation will be important for analysis of computations and models.

Evaluation

The course grade is based on attendance and participation, weekly quizzes on readings or in class activities to ensure concrete understanding of applications as they build, mid-term project and final exam.
