About DNCE 1420 A

A detailed study of the practice, history, and cultural significance of African and/or African-derived dance forms. Major emphasis on physical training.

Section Description

All levels of dance and movement experience are welcome. Designed as a detailed study of Diaspora-centric dance, the course is a physical exploration of African derived dance forms, with special emphasis on Haitian, Congolese traditional forms dance and modern contemporary forms. Students will learn the practice, history, and cultural significance of these forms. The course will cover how African American artists (past and present) have integrated rudiments of ballet and modern dance with African dance forms to create an approach toward dance choreography. We will explore the importance of the body’s relationship to earth, (gravity), community, spiritual and theater structural significance within the context of a variegated range of expressions. Students will acquire movement vocabulary relevant to the forms, as well as enhanced body placement, muscle development, and flexibility. Students will develop and improve musical awareness, rhythmic sensibility, and performance skills in dance. We will explore making phrases and the improvisational process that informs dance-making, in addition to introductory partnering technique.

Section Expectation

This course is rooted in the studio, with emphasis on physical practice, dialogue, weekly readings and writings, and frequent online and live performance viewings. Students should expect to spend 2-4 hours a week on coursework outside of class with additional time for specific presentations. Online dance viewings will be available via links through BrightSpace, or viewed during class time. All assigned readings will be available via PDF through BrightSpace.

Evaluation

Each component of the grading distribution is designed to support learning and contribute meaningfully to the final grade. Evaluations for this course are based on overall attendance, active participation, and the successful completion of all formal assignments: readings, writings, and performance viewings, as well as class presentations. Grading Distribution: Active Class Participation 30%, Viewing and Reading Reflections 30%, Essay 10%, Presentations 30%.
