An introductory investigation of public health that explores the development and scope of the discipline of public health, and issues that have been raised with regard to the practice of public health.

Section Description
This is an introductory investigation of public health exposing students to the main principles and practices of public health and its societal and population significance. Emphasis on the core functions of public health, specific health issues that impact the health of the population and comprehensive overview of the social determinants of health. Students from a variety of disciplines are welcome as public health is a multi-disciplinary field.
Section Expectation
In addition to the three hours of class meeting time per week, students are expected to engage in 6-8 hours of reading and weekly short course assignments. There is one required text for the course. The class will have several online course meetings in addition to outside learning opportunities showcasing applied public health.
Evaluation
Students will be assessed through a variety of different methods including short weekly writing, online reflections and postings and take home exams/case studies.
