Section Description
LING 4400 is the capstone course in the TESOL Certificate Program, offering an in-depth exploration of teaching English to speakers of other languages. Emphasizing English for Academic Purposes (EAP) for adult learners, the course integrates theory and practice through lesson planning, classroom instruction, and assessment across the four language skills. Students engage in reflective practice, explore diverse teaching methodologies, and participate in peer- and professor-observed teaching sessions. By combining analytical study with real-world application, the course prepares students to become confident, reflective, and adaptable TESOL educators ready to meet the diverse needs of learners in global contexts.
Section Expectation
Students in LING 4400 are expected to take an active role in both their learning and teaching practice. Class sessions will combine discussion, collaborative activities, micro-teaching, and reflection, requiring consistent attendance, preparation, and participation. Students will engage critically with readings, apply theoretical principles to classroom contexts, and demonstrate professionalism in all peer and observed teaching sessions. Assignments will include lesson plans, reflective journals, and teaching demonstrations designed to connect pedagogical theory with practical application. Constructive feedback is a key part of the learning process, and students are expected to give and receive it thoughtfully. By maintaining openness, initiative, and reflective awareness, participants will strengthen their instructional techniques, develop confidence in managing classroom dynamics, and cultivate the adaptability needed for effective TESOL practice across diverse learning environments.
