Section Description
The Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT) course expands upon the foundational knowledge and skills of the EMT to prepare students for the intermediate level of prehospital emergency care. Through a combination of classroom instruction, high-fidelity simulation, skills laboratories, and supervised clinical and field experiences, students learn to provide advanced-level assessment and care for medical and trauma patients. Content areas include advanced airway management, intravenous (IV) and intraosseous (IO) access, fluid therapy, medication administration, cardiac monitoring, and management of medical and trauma emergencies across the lifespan. Students will apply pathophysiologic principles, clinical judgment, and team-based decision-making to complex patient care scenarios. Successful completion of this course qualifies students to sit for the National Registry of EMTs (NREMT) Advanced EMT cognitive and psychomotor examinations and pursue state AEMT licensure.
Section Expectation
Students enrolled in HLTH 3570 are expected to: • Attend all classroom, lab, and clinical sessions, arriving on time and prepared to engage in both didactic and hands-on learning. • Complete all assigned readings, homework, and skill preparations prior to each class session. • Actively participate in labs, simulations, and discussions, demonstrating professional conduct and teamwork. • Meet all competency requirements as defined by the National EMS Education Standards for the Advanced EMT level and by the Vermont Department of Health EMS Office. • Demonstrate professionalism in patient care, documentation, and communication, both in the classroom and in clinical or field settings. • Maintain all required certifications, including current NREMS EMT and AHA BLS Provider credentials, and adhere to infection control and safety protocols. • Track and complete clinical and field experience requirements, including patient contacts and advanced skill sign-offs, within established timelines. • Engage in self-directed learning and remediation, seeking instructor feedback to ensure mastery of both cognitive and psychomotor competencies. • Uphold UVM’s standards of academic integrity and the ethical responsibilities of the EMS profession.
Evaluation
Student performance in HLTH 3570 will be evaluated across three domains Cognitive, Psychomotor, and Affective in alignment with national standards for EMS education. Cognitive Domain (Knowledge) • Written Exams: exams assessing medical, trauma, pharmacology, and operational knowledge. • Quizzes and Assignments: Regular quizzes, case studies, and scenario analyses reinforcing classroom content. • Final Written Exam: Comprehensive exam reflecting NREMT AEMT content areas. Psychomotor Domain (Skills) • Skills Labs: Direct observation and evaluation of performance in core AEMT skills (IV/IO access, airway management, medication administration, cardiac monitoring, trauma management, etc.). • Skills Competency Sign-Offs: Students must demonstrate proficiency and receive instructor validation for each required skill. • Simulation Assessments: Scenario-based simulations integrating assessment, critical thinking, and team leadership. Affective Domain (Professionalism) • Professional Behavior Assessment: Evaluation of attendance, preparation, communication, teamwork, and adherence to safety and ethical standards. • Field and Clinical Evaluations: Preceptor evaluations of performance during supervised clinical and EMS field rotations. • Participation and Engagement: Active involvement in discussions, labs, and debriefs demonstrating growth and professionalism. Grading and Completion To successfully complete HLTH 3570, students must: • Achieve a minimum passing grade (as defined in the course syllabus). • Demonstrate competency in all required AEMT skills. • Complete all clinical and field minimum requirements and associated documentation. • Maintain professional conduct throughout the program. Failure to meet cognitive, psychomotor, or affective standards may require remediation or may result in course failure, as outlined in the program’s competency policy.
