About ASCI 2180 A

A study of small and large domestic animal diseases. Natural response to disease, methods of diagnosis, control, and treatment. Prerequisite: ASCI 1000, a Biology course, or Instructor permission.

Section Description

Course Description The goal of this course is to introduce students to a wide variety of veterinary topics that examine animal health, disease management, control, and treatment. The class will consist of lectures, group discussions, weekly written case work ups, and group case presentations at the end of the semester. The focus of the course is clinical cases from a variety of species and situations that challenge students to think broadly by combining human health, animal health, environmental issues, ethics, and political decision-making.

Course Learning Objectives/Outcomes The expected outcomes of this course are: • Fundamental understanding of the systematic approach to animal health cases including pathophysiology, environmental issues, prevention, treatment, control, One Health implications, and client communication. • Appreciation of the complexities of animal health decision-making and how these decisions influence a wide variety of systems. • Demonstrate the ability to look at the presentation of a clinical animal health case and assess it in terms of treatment plan, client communication, prevention, and control. • Demonstrate the ability to work together in a group project presentation effectively with respect and accountability.

Evaluation

Grading Criteria/Policies Grading in the course will be as follows: Thursday cases: (Cases 1-11) 25% (2.5% each) These are graded as follows: Check= A Check minus-= B Check minus minus-= C X= no credit given, see me. As you learn more, I will expect more, and the grading will get harder. 4 quizzes: 40% {13.3 % each) Attendance: 10% Student Presentation 25% It is important to note that I do not accept make-up or late cases or allow students to take make-up tests. Recognizing that students may need to be away for illness or emergency, I drop one case and one quiz at the end of the semester to accommodate those needs. Please plan accordingly!
