Section Description

Percussion lessons are open to students of all students regardless of major or ability level. These lessons cover "classical" percussion (snare drum, marimba, timpani, xylophone, etc.) vs. drum set or congas (both of which are offered at UVM, but by different teachers). Refer to the Schedule of Courses for information on course fees, number of credits, and who should register for which course number.

Section Expectation

Emphasis is placed on reading, technique, and musicality. Students will work in one or more of the following areas: snare drum, timpani, mallet instruments (marimba, vibes, and/or xylophone) multiple percussion, and some ethnic percussion. The repertoire is chosen from the standard literature for each medium. Lessons fulfill 1 or 2 credits of the CAS Fine Arts distribution requirement and may be repeated for credit. Students are expected to practice individually each week and need to provide their own sticks/mallets and may need to purchase music.
