Section Description

Introduction to normal and disordered swallowing function across the life span including etiologies, signs/symptoms of dysphagia, diagnostic procedures and treatment within an interdisciplinary model.

Section Expectation

• Identify the stages/domains of swallowing
• Identify neuroanatomy of swallowing function
• Examine & describe structure & function of normal swallow
• Describe signs and symptoms (S/S) of a dysfunctional swallow across various diagnoses and compare/contrast with normal swallow
• Examine and describe basic differences/similarities between pediatric and adult swallowing function
• List various ethical considerations a clinician will encounter in practice
• Describe your role within various team structures across educational and medical settings
• Complete diagnostic reports critical for best patient care and service reimbursement

Students will attend a 1 hour and 15 minute class, twice a week. Weekly readings will be assigned that will cover the objectives above. Students are required to complete an online training program, MBSImP, which is an additional cost to students of $79.

Evaluation

Students are evaluated through quizzes, tests, oral and written presentations, and completion of the online training program (MBSImP).
