Section Description

SPAN 3610 is an introduction to the analysis of Hispanic literature. As such, this course represents a new stage in your cultural studies of the Hispanic world.

The objectives of the course are as follows:
• To refine sophistication, accuracy, and fluency in oral and written communication;
• To use the vocabulary of literary analysis to facilitate interpretation and expression;
• To connect a literary work with the historical, political, and personal context of its author;
• To explore a variety of themes through literary study;
• To use the unique features of narrative, poetry, and drama as tools for understanding the text.

To achieve these objectives, it will be necessary to read the assigned texts carefully; complete written assignments attentively; participate thoughtfully; and write compositions deliberately, always striving for greater precision, organization, and depth.

Section Expectation

The University of Vermont respects the Department of Education’s definition of a credit hour. For every hour spent in class, you are expected to spend approximately 2 hours outside of class. Thus, in SPAN 3610, a 3-credit course, you should plan to spend about 6 hours a week outside of the classroom preparing assignments and studying.

Evaluation

Homework may consist of critical readings to provide students a contextual background for understanding the course topics, and extensive writing tasks. Course assignments may include in-class discussions, debates and oral presentations, online discussion forums, compositions, written exams, and a final research paper.
