About CHIN 2200 A

A continuation of CHIN 2100 designed to help students finish learning basic Chinese grammar and gain more vocabulary for daily communication purposes. Prerequisite: CHIN 2100 or equivalent.

Section Description

As a continuation of CHIN2100, CHIN 2200 “2nd-year College Chinese II” is the second half of the 2nd-Year College Chinese curriculum at UVM. CHIN2200 helps students finish learning the basic Chinese grammar and gain more vocabulary for daily communication purposes. Communicative functions and major topics included are: - conducting comparisons; - getting information about temperature, price, and the number of years or times for doing something; - inquiring about or reporting the result of someone’s action; - talking about health; - asking about and showing direction; - describing the directional movement of an action; - reporting the appearance of someone or something; - asking and reporting the possibility of getting a desired result through an action; - asking and reporting that something is done with or without an adequate or satisfactory result; - asking and reporting who is responsible for something that has been done undesirably; - asking someone to perform an action on a known matter or person; - inquiring about the time, location, or manner in which an action occurred in the past; - using conjunctions to connect simple sentences and express more complex ideas.

Section Expectation

This is a hybrid course that contains both face-to-face and online components. Students are expected to meet three times a week in class and do online practice during the week. A typical week includes: 1) Monday (face-to-face): New words and expressions and major grammatical concepts; 2) Wednesday (face-to-face): Rhythmic verse recitation, meaningful and communicative practice; 3) Thursday (online & one-on-one practice): Online practice and translation homework and/or weekly/biweekly one-on-one practice with your instructor; 4) Friday (face-to-face): Interactive practice and weekly quiz. Textbook information: Essential College Chinese Book 2《大学精华汉语第二册》 by John Jinghua Yin and Diana Yiqing Sun is available for purchase at UVM Bookstore. It is the same textbook used for CHIN 2100 (CHIN2100 covers the first half of the textbook, and CHIN2200 will cover the second half).
