About CHIN 1200 C

A continuation of CHIN 1100 designed to give students basic Chinese grammar and vocabulary for daily communication purposes. Prerequisite: CHIN 1100 or equivalent.

Section Description

As a continuation of CHIN1100, CHIN1200 seeks to further develop students' communicating ability in the skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing in an engaging and effective way. Topics include food, nationality, profession, shopping, time, dates, eating out, birthdays, locations, etc. At the end of the semester, students will be able to: 1) Speak Chinese with correct pronunciation and intonation by practicing reading aloud and by getting to know more about the sense group stress and the sentence tunes in Chinese; 2) Understand the basic Chinese grammatical concepts to better monitor one’s own Chinese language production; 3) Be aware of aspects of Chinese culture imbedded in the Chinese language; 4) Develop a better understanding of the structures of Chinese characters and their meanings; 5) Look up an unknown Chinese word or character in a mobile Chinese dictionary.

Section Expectation

During the semester, students will: - Meet three times a week in class on MWF. Learn and practice listening, speaking, and reading online on Thursday. - Do assigned homework regularly. - Practice speaking in class and practice writing basic characters after class. Textbook information: Essential College Chinese Book 1《大学精华汉语第一册》ISBN 7561950292 by John Jinghua Yin and Diana Yiqing Sun is available for purchase at UVM Bookstore. Evaluation

Grades are based on attendance, participation, homework, quizzes, a mid-term speaking project, and a final exam.
