Section Description

Welcome to UVM! And welcome to this seminar which will build on your prior experience to help you navigate the new world of college writing. You’ll be writing several different kinds of texts for a variety of audiences. Every long project we write will begin with small explorations and continue through multiple drafts, and your writing will be the heart of the course. Each week, you’ll be sharing your work with peers and talking about where to go next. You’ll also learn strategies for developing and organizing ideas, and giving, receiving, and using feedback. Each portfolio you will create will build upon the next, demonstrating the links between modalities and the skills you will retain throughout the process. Unlike other English classes you may have taken in the past, you will not typically write about the readings you have been assigned. Instead, we will be looking at these texts as guides and teaching tools about the craft of writing. The texts will teach us how to manipulate prose to reach a specific audience, how to translate scholarly research and showcase it in a piece, and about positioning your own ideas amongst the views of others. The content of your essays will come from your interests and questions, community feedback, independent research, and regular reflections.

Section Expectation

Expect to write regularly, and to share that work you’re your class community and me regularly. You’ll get the chance to talk about your work formally and informally, and you’ll get the chance to see your learning grow as each project builds on the last. This class will require frequent small assignments, so be prepared for your workload to spread across the week, including online peer feedback and response.

Evaluation

You’ll will complete four major writing projects. I use a grading scheme that lets us focus on feedback and learning, with each project weighted equally across the semester. You’ll receive credit for each portfolio based on how many parts of the portfolio you submit meet specifications. This system promotes transparency and focus on your learning goals, and past students say it reduces stress and increases motivation!
