Section Description

This course examines the relationship between human societies and natural environments, tracing their interactions from the Paleolithic era to the present. Students will be introduced to the basic principles, concepts, and scholarship of environmental history, and learn how plants, animals, climates, and microorganisms have shaped—and been shaped by—the human world. From Noah’s Ark to nuclear wastelands, we will consider how human actions and ideologies have influenced the environment at a global scale. Assignments will invite students to analyze objects, organisms, and places, exploring their connections to the environmental histories of empire, industry, and globalization.
