About ASCI 2490 A
Geared towards students with little to no horse experience, focuses on hands-on skills at both the UVM Horse Barn and the UVM Morgan Horse Farm. Students will meet weekly at the UVM Horse Barn to gain experience with haltering, grooming, leading, lunging, and assessing horses. Includes learning how to identify horses, disciplines, and physical condition. Prerequisite: ASCI 1000 or ASCI 1400.

This course will meet EVERY Tuesday at the UVM Horse Barn From 1:15-2:45pm; Also there will be trips to the MHF and a weekly 90min class at the UVM Horse Barn. Some Saturday meetings TBD. Pre-reqs enforced by the system: ASCI 1000 or 1400 Open to degree and PACE students
Section Description
Geared towards students with little to no horse experience, this course will focus on hands-on skills at both the UVM Horse Barn and the UVM Morgan Horse Farm. Students will meet every Tuesday afternoon at the UVM Horse Barn to gain experience with haltering, grooming, leading, lunging, and assessing horses. This includes learning how to perform physical examinations and orthopedic examinations; learning how to bandage for prevention and treatment; and learning how to identify different colors and breeds. Students will spend six Saturday mornings at the UVM Morgan Horse Farm in Weybridge, Vermont. Students will be responsible for their own transportation to and from the farm (we can help coordinate carpools). The farm staff will introduce students to young horses, mares, and stallions, teaching them foundational horse handling and training skills. Morgan Horse Farm Dates for Fall 2024 TBD
Section Expectation
Attend weekly class meetings at the UVM Horse Barn prepared to practice hands-on skills, as well as five Saturday mornings at the UVM Morgan Horse Farm.
Evaluation
Pre-class and post-class assignments include videos, readings, and worksheets. A final comprehensive practical examination will assess your knowledge and skills. Students are required to attend five of the six Saturdays at the Morgan Horse Farm.
