Introduction to research methods in social science. Includes examination of research design, measurement, data collection, data analysis, and the presentation and theoretical interpretation of research findings. Prerequisites: STAT 1050, STAT 1110, STAT 1410, or higher; three hours of Sociology or Political Science; minimum Sophomore standing. Cross-listed with: SOC 2500.

Section Description
In today's rapidly changing world, the ability to critically evaluate information and
conduct rigorous research is more crucial than ever. This course will equip you with the
essential tools and knowledge to understand and conduct research effectively.
In this course, we will learn about concepts and variables, and how to formulate
research questions and generate hypotheses. We will explore various sampling techniques;
calculate descriptive statistics and conduct inferential statistics, including regression
analysis. Additionally, we will learn about quantitative research designs, methods for
assessing research quality, and qualitative research methods. Beyond the introduction and
the final, the course is divided into six primary learning modules: 1) Basic Concepts in
Quantitative Research, 2) Sampling Techniques, 3) Analyzing Quantitative Data, 4)
Designing Quantitative Research, 5) Assessing Research Quality, and 6) Qualitative
Research.
Evaluation
• Mid-terms & Quizzes (in-class) will assess students' understanding and
comprehension of the course materials and concepts.
• Final Project Assignments will help students learn how to code and analyze
quantitative data to test research hypotheses.
• Attendance & Participation (in-class) will help students to code and apply their
understanding.
