Art Studio: Sculpture

Introduction to making and critiquing sculpture. Using visual elements of sculpture and concepts of 3D design, students establish a foundation for individualized inquiry and experimentation. Conceptual, practical, and analytical skills are developed through presentations, research, writing, problem solving, and critiques. Prerequisites: ARTS 1010, ARTS 1011, ARTS 1014, ARTS 1100, or ARTS 1400.

Prereqs enforced by the system: ARTS 1010 or ARTS 1011 or 1014 or 1100 or ARTS 1400; SART, ARTH, ARTE majors only during the first week of registration; CAS SART, ARTH minors only for the following 3 days; Non-CAS minors for the following 2 days; then all restrictions will be removed; Minimum sophomore standing; Fee $130 PACE students by permission and override

This class is an exploration of many issues of sculpture and sculptural thinking, in addition to the goal of investigating form and space. Students will use different materials and work on ways to create three-dimensional form. Four projects will be assigned for the semester. This is a hands-on class. Students will be expected to make sculptures. Students will have access to the Art Department’s wood and welding facilities for fabrication of their projects. Part of the course structure will include critiques in which students will be asked to discuss each other’s projects in conjunction with presenting their own work. This class is an exploration of many issues of sculpture and sculptural thinking, in addition to the goal of investigating form and space. Students will use different materials and work on ways to create and present three-dimensional forms. Four projects will be assigned for the semester. Students will have access to the Art Department’s wood and metal facilities for fabrication of their projects. However, we will also work with non-traditional materials and techniques. Part of the course structure will include critiques in which students will be asked to discuss each other’s projects in conjunction with presenting their own work. We will discuss installation of sculptural objects and site -specific works. Documentation of all projects will be required and will be part of the grading structure of the class. We will discuss issues that surround contemporary sculpture, and how sculpture fits into to current cultural dialogues.

Students should be invested in approaching various ideas and methods that are inherent to creating three-dimensional works of art and investigations into sculptural concepts. The lab fee for the class covers most of the materials we will be using as well as shop fees for the use of the wood and welding facilities.

Evaluation: Completion of assigned projects, involvement in hands on training and fabrication, participation in critiques and class meetings, documentation of projects.
