Topics exploring themes in digital art at the intermediate level. Representative topics: Art & Intelligent Machines. May repeat for credit with different content. Topics vary by offering; periodic offering at intervals that may exceed four years. Prerequisites: ARTS 1010, ARTS 1011, ARTS 1014, ARTS 1100, or ARTS 1400.

Prereqs enforced by the system: ARTS 1010 or ARTS 1100 or ARTS 1400; SART, ARTH, ARTE majors only during the first week of registration; CAS SART, ARTH minors only for the following 3 days; Non-CAS minors for the following 2 days; then all restrictions will be removed; Minimum sophomore standing; Fee $40 PACE students by permission and override

Section Description

This class explores the themes of and relationships between digital media, humans and ecology in a broad context. Projects using various digital tools including Adobe CC software will be used to create projects that might include drawings, time-based media, and social network performances that investigate assumptions about nature, reality, wilderness and the human/non-human binary. No prior experience with software is necessary.

Section Expectation

Students will create work in response to readings in ecology and related fields and participate in critiques for projects. Readings and short reading responses, participation in discussion and critiques are required. Students are expected to meet deadlines for class projects and reading responses.

Evaluation

Students are evaluated a total of 60% for 4 projects in this course, 30% for reading response and 10% for participation. Student projects will be evaluated on concept/idea, depth of investigation, amount of challenge, time/effort, technical quality and overall effectiveness. Your trajectory over the course of the semester will be taken into consideration. Ambitious projects and experimentation are encouraged.
