The application of graphic design principles to practical problems, including the impact of popular design on society, and the exploration of visual elements in contemporary printing processes. Prerequisites: ARTS 1010, ARTS 1011, ARTS 1014, ARTS 1100, or ARTS 1400.

Prereqs enforced by the system: ARTS 1010 or ARTS 1011 or ARTS 1014 or 1100 or 1400; SART, ARTH, ARTE majors only during the first week of registration; CAS SART, ARTH minors only for the following 3 days; Non-CAS minors for the following 2 days; then all restrictions will be removed; Minimum sophomore standing; Fee $45 PACE students by permission and override

Section Description

In the context of a fine arts curriculum, this course introduces design communication strategies in graphic design and the graphic arts. Course themes include visual research, composition, and idea synthesis. Students are encouraged to take risks, develop visual ideas, and articulate personal styles. Students will receive Adobe Creative Suite training and class discussions evaluate new AI design processes. Readings and writing reflections introduce formstorming, framing, transparency, modularity, scale, texture, and color. The semester includes a combination of independent and collaborative projects. For the final project of the semester students design satirical packaging designs for the annual exhibition “American Supermarket.”

Section Expectation

Beginners are welcome, there is no expectation that students have worked with design software before taking the class. Students should have an interest in graphic arts and design, and a desire to learn how to work professionally with computer tools.

Evaluation

Students are graded on the quality of their work and the effort they put into assignments. Students in the class are encouraged to take risks and work with abstract concepts. The course requires consistent attendance and active participation in class.
