Section Description

Overview This course is designed to build on a foundation of the basics of drawn visual language: line, value, form and composition. Working from this basic vocabulary you can begin to explore systems of drawing as a means of expression and communication. We will consider the possibilities of drawing as an expression of visual thought. The course begins with a review of observational drawing and techniques and as the semester progresses we will explore a variety of rendering strategies using a wide range of media. During the semester, we will look at the work of well-established visual artists, as well as lesser-known emerging contemporary artists, to serve as inspiration for your own work and artistic experimentation. Objectives You will work on your visual acuity and practice organizing visual information through drawing from still life, interiors and the figure as a departure point for your drawings.
You will develop a daily practice of drawing through the keeping of a sketchbook. Additionally, you will also begin to visually express ideas through your drawing and learn to articulate perceptions about the relationships between materials, techniques, size/scale, and content as you explore different ways/strategies of creating drawings. You will explore and develop language to describe the ways in which the construction of a drawing is inextricable from the functioning/meaning of a drawing.

Section Expectation

Class time will be spent drawing and looking at the work of established and emerging artists as it relates to our work in class Your full participation in class is required.. Participation means that have all your drawing materials with you, you are engaged in your work and contribute to any and all class discussion or critique. Group critiques are an important part of this class and you are required to attend. You are expected to actively engage in drawing by keeping a sketchbook that is worked on outside of class for 30 minutes a day. You should expect to spend 2-3 hours on homework assignments outside of class (this excludes time spent on daily drawings). You are expected to complete projects on time. Late assignments will be subject to reduced grades. Projects turned in more than 2 class days late will not be accepted. Your drawings should demonstrate a solid understanding of concepts introduced in class and a strong commitment of time and effort.
