Section Description
Everyone is an artist” said Joseph Beuys. Is everyone an artist? Is your mother an artist? Are the farmers herding their sheep artists? What about the hand painted bodega sign, is that art? Art and being an artist has been watered down by our society, devaluing it and mislabeling it to further society’s capitalist goals. How can we take back the power of the artist and return art to its feral, wild self? This class will do that by exploring what it means to create without inhibitions, to embrace failure, and to help students realize where their art fits into the local and global context of contemporary art. We will work on a variety of projects ranging from paintings, printmaking, digital literacy and social sculpture. Some artists that we will discuss are Shana Moulton, Albert Oehlen, Ulises Carrion, Nicole Eisenmann, Paul Thek, Susan Ciancolo, Claire Fontaine, Mike Kelley, Joan Jonas and Lonnie Holley. This class is for the maker, this class is for the dreamer, this class is for you.
