Section Description
Anthropology students often hear about ethnography as the final product of anthropological fieldwork, but there is rarely enough time to engage with ethnography over the course of the semester. This course will provide a guide to reading ethnographies from different eras, and an opportunity to critique them both as works of literature as a works of science. In addition to reading ethnography, there will be watching and listening and sensing and theorizing, even producing ethnographic work. We will focus on how the authors' perspectives are conveyed in writing, how broader social frameworks affected the kinds of stories being told, as well as the ethical challenges inherent to the format.
Section Expectation
Weekly readings and class discussions, primarily available on Brightspace.
Evaluation
Assignments will depend on the length and nature of the materials. Class attendance and participation will also be assessed.
