Section Description
This course is a survey of the history of dance as a performing art form, with a primary emphasis on concert dance (ballet and modern dance) in Europe and the United States. GOALS 1. To understand, experience, and gain insight into dance as a performing art tradition. 2. To explore and understand the history, major artists, and development of ballet. 2. To explore and understand the history, major artists, and constant innovation of modern dance. 4. To understand the values of dance as a form of artistic communication and entertainment. 5. To engage in seeing, writing, and talking about dance with increasing ease and aptitude.
Section Expectation
Assigned reading and reading quizzes. Online and live dance performances also required, with written response papers. Mid-term and final exam. Short research paper.
