Section Description

Important: This course has a feminist/ queer/ trans focus and can count toward GSWS/ SGIS majors and minors. Like other sections of ENGS 2000, this class introduces key terms, concepts, and methods that prepare students for upper-level English classes. We will survey psychoanalytic, Marxist, decolonial, structuralist and post-structuralist approaches to literature, as well as critical race theory. In the process, we will discuss concepts essential to literary studies in general, such as close reading, authorial intent, historicism, indeterminacy, narrative form, subjectivity, and ideology. Each unit will conclude with a reading that shows how recent feminist, queer and/or trans theory has grown out of the older theoretical models.

Section Expectation

Two essays, frequent informal written responses to readings, and active participation in discussion.
