About SOC 2355 A
Examination of socio-historical changes in the construction of childhood and experiences of children; applications of interpretive approaches in contemporary sociology to analyze children's peer cultures. Prerequisite: Three hours of Sociology.

Section Description
This course is an introduction to the sociology of childhood. It is designed to acquaint students with selected sociological theories and concepts in the field of sociology of childhood. We will examine current debates and historical trends and analyze issues such as inequality in education, children’s agency, peer relationships, socialization, children in a consumer culture, racial identity, and children in disasters. We will use a wide range of research and sources to inform our sociological analysis of childhood.
Section Expectation
This course has three classes each week. There are 45 students in this course. Students are expected to attend all classes and to participate in discussions. Classes will consist of lectures, discussions, guest lectures, interactive activities, and films. The class will have three exams and short writing assignments throughout the semester. The coursework is demanding, and students are expected to read all the material listed in the syllabus for each week (UVM policy states that the minimum amount of work expected from students is at least two hours outside of class for every hour in class). The classroom is screen-free (no phones, no laptops, no devices).
Evaluation
The grades in this course will be based on the three exams, class attendance and participation, and writing assignments. The exams will cover material from lectures, readings, discussions, films, and guest speakers. There may be opportunities for extra credit during the semester.
