Notes

Exploring plant sources for drugs; Special Topics courses cannot carry CC designations. Open to Degree and PACE students

Section Description

Plants have been evolving secondary metabolites for millennia. Different cultures have investigated these phytochemicals for therapeutic use potential. In this interdisciplinary course we will identify historical and modern plant-based therapeutic products. Plant-based products will be discussed based on plant morphology, phytochemistry, and their place of origin. We will examine the current process of drug development through investigation of botanical drug approval in the US. To do this we will critically examine the evidence of plant-based products in terms of safety and effectiveness in pre-clinical and clinical trials. We will introduce the safety, purity, and efficacy standards used in drug development. This course will provide students with a foundation of evidence-based scientific knowledge in a complex and evolving area of medicine, while introducing key concepts in plant biology, human physiology, and pharmacology.
