Section Description

Language can inform or deceive, unite or divide, liberate or oppress. It is both a mirror and a maker of power, shaping identities and whole societies. In this seminar, we explore how language influences politics and culture in contemporary Germany, where linguistic choices both reflect and drive social and political change. we will analyze the rhetoric of politicians and parties, uncovering how far-left and far-right movements use language to mobilize or polarize. We will examine Germany’s linguistic identity in Europe and beyond, questioning the global dominance of English and its impact on German. Other topics include language policy, the persuasive power of advertising, and the role of pop culture and social media in shaping discourse. Further, we will investigate language and gender dynamics, the politics of “integration,” and how ethnolects and youth language challenge societal norms. Multilingualism, regional dialects, and the enduring legacy of Nazi-era language further illuminate the interplay of language, identity, and power. Through case studies, critical readings, and class discussions, you will gain a deeper understanding of how language shapes—and is shaped by—modern German society.
