Section Description
This course will critically examine the concept of “development” and the significant challenges it faces. In particular, we will focus on the idea of ‘globalization,” which is central to contemporary development. Today, it is impossible to comprehend what development means without exploring the concept of globalization. Key questions include: How are neoliberal socio-economic practices connected to the rising international and national inequality? What are the implications of a globalized national economy for communities and environments? How have corporate policies and practices evolved, and what have been the results? In this class, students will evaluate the forms, objectives, and impacts of development from its inception and critically analyze various notions of development, such as economic-centered development, neoliberal development, and sustainable development.
