Section Description

In WLIT 2360 we read the most important Japanese literary works from Japan’s classical, medieval, and early modern eras, corresponding to the cultures of the court, samurai warrior, and merchant townsmen. Students will learn the major genres, themes, and concerns in Japanese literature as well as how literature is connected to social and historical conditions in Japan. The instructor will provide historical and cultural background information during lectures and facilitate class discussions.

Section Expectation

All students are expected to complete the reading assignments before coming to class and to express their opinions, interpretation, and confusion concerning the readings during discussion time. To help you prepare for class, the instructor will provide Reading Question Worksheets. At the beginning of discussion sessions, random students will be asked questions from the reading questions worksheets. Other students are expected to respond to these comments.

Evaluation

Class Participation………….…(25%) Includes attendance & participation (1pt/class) and presentations (3 pts). You earn Class Participation points by attending the online TEAMS and participating in class discussion. If you miss a class you can earn class participation points by viewing the class recording and posting a question on Yellowdig related to the class meeting [label as “Class Meeting ‘date’”] by the next Sunday after the missed class. You can only use this option 5 times over the semester. Yellowdig Discussion board……(15%) To promote engagement with the material, topics are given but student generated. Details forthcoming Reading Questions Worksheets.. (30%) RQW and Quizzes will be given to verify prep and reading comprehension. Essays…………………............…(30%) Four essays: essay 1 (5%), essay 2 (5%), essay 3 (5%), and essay 4 (15%)
