Section Description

CHIN3110 "Conversational Chinese" aims at helping students integrate the Chinese linguistic knowledge and skills they have acquired so far into Chinese conversations across a variety of practical settings both within and beyond the classroom walls. At the end of the semester, students will: 1) Gain a more contextualized and nuanced understanding of the linguistic patterns they have acquired so far, particularly through examining and practicing these patterns in different settings. 2) Improve listening and speaking proficiency through engaging in conversational practice in Chinese. 3) Gain confidence in speaking Chinese by practicing with native speakers. 4) Develop competence for intercultural communication. 5) Reflect on and thus further individualize their Chinese learning strategies for future practice. Textbook: No textbook required. A course packet consisting of materials from a wide range of sources will be provided to you from Hu Laoshi.

Section Expectation

The class meets twice a week with each session lasting 75 minutes. Learning a new chapter/topic every two weeks, students will expect a bi-weekly routine that features 1) studying and practicing scripted and semi-scripted conversations that integrate previously learned linguistic structures and/or expressions, 2) exploring current media for authentic materials relevant to the topic, and 3) holding conversations about these materials. In addition to interacting with the instructor and classmates in class, students should expect to do homework after class, complete chapter oral quizzes, and submit homework and quizzes on time.

Evaluation

Grades are based on attendance and participation, homework, quizzes, one midterm speaking test, one final oral presentation.
