About ALE 3450 A
A comprehensive understanding of landscape design strategies in the built environment. Students will work on one project that could enable communities and cities to thrive, exploring the driving forces of change in the landscape and developing strategic masterplans for addressing socioecological challenges. Explores the intersection of urbanism and landscape design, such as climate crisis, local economies, biodiversity preservation, environmental justice, and social equity. Prerequisites: ALE 2371 or CDAE 1010; minimum Sophomore standing; or Instructor permission. Pre/Co-requisites: ALE 2371 or CDAE 1010; Sophomore standing.

Section Description
Learn how to integrate urban planners, landscape architects, architects, engineers, natural sciences professionals, and the community to create more vibrant and resilient cities. The course focuses on built environments and how to deploy landscape planning and design to solve the challenges of the 21st Century, specifically on a district and neighborhood scale. A field trip to Montreal, Canada, is mandatory (Sept 5-7). A passport or other travel documents are required.
Section Expectation
Design studio-centered approach. Intermediate to Advanced visual communications skills. Software: Adobe Creative Cloud, SketchUp, and others. Prerequisites: Any of the following courses: Digital Illustration, Drafting Design I, Landscape Design Fundamentals, or Communication Design I.
Evaluation
15-Minute City Chittenden Proposal (In-pairs, 15%). Urban Strategy Presentation & Workshop (In-pairs, 25%). 3 posters and physical model (Team of 4, 60%).
