Art History: Origins of Christian Art

Topics examining the visual arts in the ancient world. Representative topics: Roman Art; Art and the Ancient Silk Road. May repeat for credit with different content. Topics vary by offering; periodic offering at intervals that may exceed four years. Prerequisite: ARTH 1016 or ARTH 1410.

How does a new religion visually define itself? In this course, students will examine the origins of Christian art produced during the Roman and Byzantine Empires. Looking primarily at wall paintings, sculpture, architecture, mosaics, and religious artifacts, we will trace the origins and development of Christian imagery in relation to changes in religious doctrine and devotional practices. Considering the ancient artistic cultures of Rome and the Near East in which the first Christians lived, we will study the appropriations and innovations of early Christian artists and worshippers. We will then trace the developing standardization and deviations of imagery in the context of social and political developments of the church as it spread through the Eastern Roman and Byzantine Empires.

Students will develop a knowledge of Christian narratives, iconography, and symbols in the context of ancient art from the Mediterranean region. Reading and writing assignments will help students develop the visual and textual vocabulary to recognize, understand, and effectively discuss the important themes of early Christian art.

Students are expected to attend class regularly, and will be evaluated through writing assignments.
