Section Description

This class will focus on the study of domestic and international politics in East Asia, part of the world that is home to more than one fifth of all people, with particular attention on Japan, Greater China (including Taiwan and Hong Kong), the two Koreas, and the United States. In the realm of domestic politics, we will focus on the role and effects of domestic political institutions, including changes and reforms of the political system over time and the role played by political leaders. In the realm of international politics, we will examine some of the salient issues among selected East Asian countries and with the United States with an eye to better understanding some of the complex challenges in fostering cooperation over conflict.

Section Expectation

Students are expected to complete all assignments, including the written papers, homework, and any tests. They also should attend every class and participate in class discussions.

Evaluation

The general basis for the course grade will be based on following: 1) short homework assignments; 2) essays; 3) tests on readings or key concepts; and 6) attendance and participation.
