Writing practice, sentence structure, correct expression, and guided discussions in Spanish of cultural topics. A good command of basic grammar expected. May repeat for credit with different content. Topics vary by offering; periodic offering at intervals that may exceed four years. Prerequisite: SPAN 2200 or equivalent; or Instructor permission.

In this composition and conversation course we will examine the voices of Afro-descendant and Indigenous Latin American women. While exploring the concepts of erasure, colorblindness, and nation building, students will engage in a study of counter-narratives that examine the political power, economic power, legal strategies, and the cultural production employed by Afro-descendant and Indigenous Latin American women to subvert structural discrimination in their countries. Through readings, investigation, writing, and discussion we will explore a diversity of voices situated in their historical, political, and social contexts. This course uses an interdisciplinary approach to facilitate the expression of ideas and the discussion of different points of view while studying language and culture. This course is conducted entirely in Spanish, and works on diverse writing styles (description, narration, argumentation, and exposition), as well as conversational and presentational speaking skills. Important: Within three months prior to enrolling in your first language class at UVM, you need to take the online placement test (even if you haven't studied the language) and enroll in the course level recommended. Note that if you enroll in a class without taking the test, or enroll in a class below your recommended level, the system will disenroll you from the course (you will receive an email notification if this occurs). Section Expectations: This course relies on discussion and participation. Students should expect to spend 6 hours a week on coursework outside of class, with additional time for exams and presentations.

Evaluation: Grades will be based on attendance and participation, writing assignments, compositions with revisions, oral presentations, written exams, final project.
