Topics from microeconomics and fields applying it, such as game theory, health economics, environmental economics, the Vermont economy and urban and regional economy, and urban and regional economics. Includes a substantial writing component. Topics vary by offering; periodic offering at intervals that may exceed four years. May be repeated for credit with different content. Prerequisites: STAT 1410, ECON 2400, and ECON 2450.

Section Description
The course examines the many forms in which institutions (i.e. laws, social norms, conventions) affect economic performance. It gives particular attention to recent research that emphasizes the role of culture and beliefs in the path of economic development. In addition, the course discusses recent scholarship on political institutions and institutional change focusing particularly on the challenges in the development and consolidation of democratic institutions.
Evaluation
You will have to write a final paper for this course, which generally is worth 30% of your grade. Other potential components of your grade are class participation, and exams.
