Physiology of endocrine and autocrine/paracrine systems and growth factors.
Section Expectation
Course Learning Objectives This upper level course is for students with good background in biology, physiology, and anatomy. The course provides a comprehensive coverage of the fundamental concepts of the physiological functions and functional mechanisms of the hormonal products of the endocrine system. Specific Objectives: Students completing this course will: 1. know the major hormones produced by the individual endocrine glands. 2. know the synthesis and modification of the hormones. 3. know release and transport of the hormones. 4. know hormone receptors on the target cells and the mechanisms of hormone action. 5. know the effects of hormones on target cells and on physiological processes. 6. know the diseases caused by inappropriate hormone functions. 7. develop skills in critical evaluation through readings, discussions and class projects. 8. improve communication skills through oral presentations and discussions. ISBN: 978-1-264-27845-9 (strongly recommended) All students are encouraged to engage in class interaction with the instructor (including use of iClicker).
