Section Description

Most people find animal behavior fascinating, but it is essential for a student studying for a degree in Animal Science to have a deep understanding of behavior and what drives it. This course will adopt a scientific approach to answer some of the fundamental questions about animal behavior such as how and why animals behave the way they do. While we will investigate theory, this course will be taught from an applied perspective. That means using our knowledge to investigate and solve practical, real-world problems. For example, we will learn how to observe and record behavior in a quantitative way and apply our knowledge to a project. We will explore broad areas of animal behavior such as evolution, social behavior, communication, feeding and movement. Several different species will be considered including examples of wild, domestic and captive animals. By understanding animal behavior, students will be able to improve animal welfare and describe how behavior can affect conservation strategies. Classes will incorporate examples of well-known behaviorists to give students examples of careers in animal behavior. Class sessions will include lectures, discussions, guest speakers, demonstrations and a field trip.

Section Expectation

Students are expected to attend every lecture. Students should expect to spend 6-8 hours a week on coursework outside of class, with additional time for the semester-long project. These projects will be completed at sites on or near campus or through alternative arrangements with the lecturer. Students are responsible for their own transportation.

Evaluation

Evaluation will be through a semester long project, plus quizzes and a final exam.
