Survey of research and theories on child development from conception to adolescence emphasizing experimental analyses of early social and cognitive development. Prerequisite: PSYS 1400.

Note that this is subject to change This survey course is intended to introduce theory and research in developmental psychology from the prenatal period through adolescence/emerging adulthood. Course goals are to: 1) Address historical and contemporary theoretical perspectives regarding the study of children and their development. 2) Introduce students to central topics in developmental psychology. 3) Familiarize students with the specialized methods that researchers have adopted in their assessment of child development. 4) Help students learn how to navigate a large enrollment course and become proficient at taking multiple choice examinations. Learning Objectives After completing this course, it is our hope that you will be able to: 1) Define, identify, and describe key scientific concepts, research findings, and theories in developmental psychology. 2) Apply empirical findings in developmental psychology to “real-world” problems. 3) Understand the unique methodological and ethical challenges and potential solutions to conducting research with infants, children, adolescents, and their families. 4) Successfully navigate a large enrollment course and improve your performance on multiple choice tests.
