Introduction to the field of gender, sexuality, and women's studies. Topics include key theoretical approaches to conceptualizing gender, sexuality, and power; how gender and sexuality are policed; and the relationship between gender, sexuality, and other social categories. Credit not awarded for both GSWS 1500 and GSWS 1010.

Section Description
Introduction to the field of gender, sexuality, and women's studies. Topics include key theoretical approaches to conceptualizing gender, sexuality, and power; how gender and sexuality are policed; and the relationship between gender, sexuality, and other social categories. We will analyze depictions of gender and sexual identities in literature, media, zines, and visual art. In addition, we will explore theoretical texts, including readings in intersectionality, queer theory, and ecofeminism.
Section Expectation
During class, students can expect full class and small group discussion, as well as time for writing and self-reflection. Students should expect to complete significant reading outside of class as well as writing assignments.
Evaluation
Students will be evaluated through participating in reading discussions, writing reading responses, conducting a group presentation, and writing an analytical paper and/or creative response.
