Section Description
Art of the Essay is a student-centered, workshop-based course in the reading and writing of short nonfiction prose across three main rhetorical modes: Narrative, exposition, and opinion/argument. We will also study and discuss subgenres of the artful essay: memoir/autobiography, topical essays, short narrative journalism, and criticism written in a personal/familiar voice.
Section Expectation
Daily readings; several short writing exercises/assignments; drafting and revision of three complete essays; peer critique workshops; creative and critical reading responses; completion of a final portfolio of finished essays.
Evaluation
Grade is based on participation and work completion throughout the class and a final portfolio of revised writing.
