About SOC 3240 A

Analysis of sociocultural structure of the legal institution and its relationships to other institutions: the social organization of the legal profession, lawmaking, and the courts. Prerequisites: SOC 1500; SOC 2500 or SOC 2550; minimum Junior standing. Declared Law & Society minors may substitute SOC 1210 for other prerequisite coursework in Sociology.

Section Description

This course offers students an overview of key concepts and debates in the field of sociology of law. Students will review and discuss a range of classical and contemporary texts in the field and wide range of examples and case studies from the US and worldwide. The course is focused on : a) foundational sociological approaches to conceptualizing law and their contemporary application, b) critical approaches the relationship between law and social inequalities, and c) the relationship between law and social movements. Students will have the opportunity to develop their own interests in the field through course assignments and discussions.

Learning Objectives for this course include: - Develop a foundation of sociological approaches to law as an institution - Develop a critical insight on the intersection of social structures and inequalities in law - Develop analytical skills in assessing various topics and concepts within the field - Develop professional writing and communicative skills through class participation and assignments. All required readings will be available online via the weekly modules of the course website on Brightspace.

Evaluation

Class attendance and participation; 2 x reflection papers (300-500 words); blog post (300-500 words); midterm and final papers (2000-2500 words)
