About ASCI 2420 A
Behavior modification and training of the young horse under saddle and in the cart. Introduction to interdisciplinary directions open to the equine athlete and to conditioning programs associated with these options. Prerequisite: ASCI 1000 or ASCI 1400.

Section Description
Equine Training Techniques focuses the training and handling of horses age 0-25. Students learn how to safely handle and train horses at the UVM Horse Barn and the UVM Morgan Horse Farm. The class is a combination of lecture and hands on experience. Students will learn how to properly work with a wide range of horses. To give students an understanding of horse behavior as it pertains to shaping/modifying the desired response. This class presents fundamental training techniques for working with horses of all ages and levels of training, but focuses mainly on starting the young horse and teaching that individual the “basics/fundamentals”.
Section Expectation
Students are expected to complete a semester long training project, which includes a proposal, an oral presentation, and a written paper. In addition, they will be maintaining a journal, solving weekly problems, and completing weekly reading assignments.
Evaluation
Students will be graded on their attendance, participation, semester long project, problem solving, and journal writing.
