Section Description

Devices and instruments used in clinical and biomedical research settings were designed for specific purposes. In the clinical setting, devices are used to measure, monitor and treat, e.g., removing a clot from an artery, monitoring brain oxygenation during neurosurgery. In the research setting, devices and instruments are used to assist in studying biological systems and solving problems underlying disease states, e.g., measuring force of a muscle fiber or attachments that allow cells to metastasize. This course is focused on the development, design and adaptation of biomedical devices and instruments. It is a team-taught course by faculty in the Larner College of Medicine and UVM Medical Center and focuses on exciting active areas of biomedical device development and applications at UVM and the UVM Medical Center. Additional lectures will be given on real-life aspects of manufacturing and commercializing biomedical devices and students will tour clinical and research laboratories to see and in some cases demo medical devices.

Section Expectation

By the end of this course, students should be able to: · Identify a variety of real-world clinical medical problems and how they were addressed by a medical device or instrument · Identify a variety of devices and instruments used in biomedical research · Describe the working principles behind a variety of medical devices and instruments · Gain insight into processes involved in commercialization and manufacturing of biomedical engineering products and devices · Experience an elevator pitch to highlight new ideas that have come up for any given device during the course

Evaluation

Attendance will be taken at each class with a evaluation of the previous lecture. Two written assignments on clinical devices and potential improvements as well as a group elevator pitch project.
