Examines social justice issues in education and explores what it means to be a social justice educator. Students will critically reflect, analyze relevant cases, and engage in social justice advocacy. Pre/Co-requisites: EDML 3770 or EDML 3890 or EDML 3990 or EDTE 1610 or NR 1610 or Instructor permission.

Section Description

In this course we will examine social justice issues in education and explore what it means to be a social justice educator, ultimately applying what we learn to a specific issue and context. Course activities will ask you to, for example: 1) Learn from the work of Vermont social justice educators and their students. 2) Experiment with using various social justice education frameworks and resources. 3) Critically examine power, oppression, and privilege as they pertain to education. 4) Prepare for and practice social justice teaching. 5) Investigate social justice issues in education and in collaboration with others, engage in advocacy.

Section Expectation

This course meets in-person and is largely exploration and discussion-based.

Evaluation

This course is proficiency-based and grades are based on student performance in relation to specific learning objectives, which will be assessed at specific intervals using a portfolio of student work.
