Section Description

HDFS 1010 is a 3-credit introductory civic-learning based seminar course for incoming Human Development & Family Studies (HDFS) Majors. This course is intended to facilitate learning how to think about human development and family studies (HDFS) as a field of study and applied practice as well as to understand how to be an active and effectual contributor to the field through writing, research, and practice. The course emphasizes development of students’ critical thinking and reflection, information literacy, and understanding of service-learning and the applied practice of HDFS skills. Prerequisites: HDFS Major

Section Expectation

Most required learning materials are made available via BrightSpace. If any texts are required for purchase, that information will be provided no later than the first day of class. For students with financial need, textbooks can be checked out for the HDFS Program Library of texts. Class sessions are largely discussion-based and include a variety of in-class activities, including but not limited to personal reflection, individual assignments, and small group work. Regular attendance and engagement are expected. For most classes, we will use a “flipped classroom” model, where lectures, videos, and other advance prep work will be essential to successful execution of exercises, projects, and discussions held during class time. A new instructor will be teaching in Fall 2025, so some changes may be made to course expectations from past offerings.

Evaluation

The course has typically included evaluation of students’ class participation, written work, service-learning journals, critical reflection assignments, and a final project, including a paper and deliverable. A new instructor will be teaching in Fall 2025, so some changes may be made to assessments used in HDF 1010.
