About CEE 1150 A
Introduction to statics, mechanics of materials, and heat transfer. Credit not awarded for both CEE 1150 and CEE 1100. Prerequisites: MATH 1248 or MATH 1242; PHYS 1500.
Notes
Prereqs enforced by the system: MATH 1248 or MATH 1242; PHYS 1500 Open to degree and PACE students
Section Description
In this course, we study the basic principles of statics, mechanics of materials, and heat transfer with applications to engineering problems. First, vector operations, two-dimensional (2D) forces acting on rigid bodies, frictional forces, and moments are studied with a particular emphasis on the equilibrium of a particle and equilibrium of a rigid body in 2D. Second, we study the fundamental concepts of structural analysis and solve problems involving simple trusses and frames by drawing free-body diagrams and shear/bending-moment diagrams. Furthermore, the concept of center of gravity and centroid, and moment of inertia are also studied. Computing stresses and strains under various loading conditions (axial, shear, and bending) are also studied. Finally, the basic modes of heat transfer (e.g., conduction, convection, and radiation) are briefly introduced and we mainly study the physics of heat conduction in 1D and 2D problems.
Section Expectation
The successful student is expected to demonstrate an ability to understand the basic principles of statics (equilibrium conditions, reaction and internal forces) and mechanics of materials (stresses, strains, elastic deformation).
Evaluation
Grades will be assigned based on three examinations (2 midterm and 1 final), homework and a Python-based project.
