Builds on theories of experiential education and social-ecological systems resilience to provides students with knowledge and skills related to outdoor education. Students will learn resilience-based approaches to leading groups in outdoor settings. Includes core DEI content (both principles and practices) related to critical, indigenous, and decolonizing perspectives on outdoor education.

Section Description

This innovative course is designed to prepare educators to use the outdoors as a context for teaching, learning, and resilience-building. The course draws on theories and models for experiential and outdoor education and integrates these with education, social service, and social science perspectives on developing personal and social-ecological systems resilience. The course includes core DEI content (principles and practices) related to critical, indigenous, and decolonizing perspectives on outdoor education. Students will learn strengths-based approaches to small group facilitation, the basics of planning and implementing outdoor education for diverse audiences, and a variety of hard and soft skills which will be practiced during a series of intensive field experiences held outdoors. This course serves as an elective course for UVM’s Undergraduate Certificate in Place-Based Education and will incorporate physical activities such as hiking, camping and ropes course adventures.

Section Expectation

This hybrid course combines asynchronous online work with two full-day field sessions and a three-day overnight backpacking trip all of which are mandatory attendance. The course fee covers equipment rental, food, and transportation costs for the backpacking trip as well as ropes course admission fee on one of the full-day sessions.

Evaluation

Students will be evaluated based on a field presentation, skills exams, action journal, and participation/attendance.
