Critical examination of central educational/social issues and values with special emphasis on the struggle for justice and equality. Themes include schooling and social class, race, and gender; the purposes of education; and the responsibilities of teachers. Prerequisite: Completion of a 2000 level course.

Section Description

The purpose of this course is for students to learn about the historical, philosophical, and social determinants that have influenced and shaped education to the present day. Through an understanding of the evolution of the educational system and its doctrine students will prepare themselves to better understand and tackle the challenges facing the future of the field. This course will be delivered seminar style. Students will be expected to come prepared to class and ready to engage in dialogue, group work, and other class activities.

Section Expectation

Students are expected to not only attend this fully in-person class but be active participants in this seminar style class especially during collaborative learning opportunities of which the course features many. Students are expected to be prepared with weekly readings and homework assignments. Students will present to their classmates both in group and individual formats as well as engage in written and other formal projects.

Evaluation

Students will have weekly homework and reading assignments. Students will be evaluated based on their participation in classroom activities. Students will produce four major assignments including a historical research paper, a group presentation on philosophy of education, a scholarly personal reflection, and lead a mini-lesson.
