Section Description

This intermediate-level class focuses on contemporary movement as an art form, practice, and performance. This class will investigate a diverse spectrum of dance practices that enable rigorous and playful exploration of the dancer/body as an instrument for contemporary movement, thinking, and making.

The course will focus on and prioritize the body in motion by building strength, endurance, range of motion, efficiency, and coordination. Through exercises that hone a grounded perspective of space, time, intention, and more, we will examine movement as a practitioner, creator, and observer. We will dance from multiple points of view, examining the way we move/think about contemporary dance and relating it to the wider context of contemporary dance while deepening our own sense of self-expression, joy, and power. The course will involve concentrated beginning-intermediate-level work in contemporary dance. Theoretical issues of importance to the dancer are addressed through discourse, viewings, readings, and writings.

Section Expectation

This course is entirely studio-based, with emphasis on practice, discourse, weekly readings and writings, and frequent online and live performance viewings. Students should expect to spend 2-4 hours a week on coursework outside of class, with additional time for specific presentations and finals. All assigned readings will be available via PDF through BrightSpace.
