Music Ensemble: University Symphony Orchestra

Full orchestra comprising strings, woodwinds, brass, and percussion. Several performances each year. Open to students from all majors and colleges. Audition for placement. With Instructor permission, students with a different participation level may register for one credit. Prerequisite: Placement audition.

The University of Vermont Symphony Orchestra is a 90-member ensemble of university students and community members. The orchestra is composed of students who have majored in a diverse range of subjects, and it performs one to two times a semester, presenting an array of baroque, classical, romantic, and twentieth-century pieces. All university students who play an orchestral instrument are invited to audition. Assignments and Reading: Students are expected to work 4 hours per week outside of rehearsal which should include practicing instruments (assigned parts of repertoire listed below, etudes with relevant technical and musical elements, and/or solos), listening to professional recordings, and discussing among peers. Students are expected to perform with correct notes, articulation, dynamics, rhythm, and appropriate styles, and learn further and review previous weeks’ work own time. Expectations: Students are required to attend every rehearsal and performance. Students are required to practice the part and maintain the highest level of performance. Students are expected to be proficient enough on the instruments, as instruction on how to play the instruments will not be given during the rehearsal.

Evaluation will be based on attendance and preparations for the rehearsals and concerts.
