Section Description
Percussion Ensemble is open to students of all majors at UVM. Emphasis is placed on the art of ensemble playing: listening and responding to ideas of balance, accompaniment, etc. The ensemble presents at least two concerts per year, and occasionally performs off-campus at public schools, colleges, and professional meetings. The repertoire is chosen from the standard literature as well as improvisational percussion music.
Section Expectation
Students will improve their understanding of ensemble playing, paying particular attention to their role in the music (melody, accompaniment, bass-line, etc.) and how that role impacts dynamics and articulation. Students will often hone their sense of rhythm (particularly how to play in asymmetrical meter) and improvisation. In addition, students develop or further develop their skill in working steadily over an extended period (the semester) to achieve a long-term goal (the performance) – a skill that can be applied to their other classes and their life beyond the University.
